A tragic stampede on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya claimed the lives of four people, including a woman and her daughter from Belagavi, Karnataka, and a devotee from Gujarat. Officials clarified that there was no VIP protocol in place at the time. A helpline number, 1920, has been issued for information about the injured.
The incident took place during the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Wednesday, when an overwhelming crowd gathered for the Mauni Amavasya holy dip. Chaos ensued, leading to a stampede that left 30 people dead and around 60 injured, according to official reports. DIG Mahakumbh Vaibhav Krishna confirmed that out of the 30 people who lost their lives, 25 have been identified so far. Among them, 4 are from Karnataka, 1 from Assam, and 1 from Gujarat. The remaining victims are yet to be identified.
Right now, 36 injured people are receiving treatment. Officials have clarified that there was no VIP protocol in place at the time of the incident. For any information about the injured, a helpline number 1920 has been issued.
The people who are reported to have died in the Maha Kumbh include Jyoti Hattarwada (50), a BJP worker from Wadgaon, and her 16-year-old daughter Megha. Two others, Mahadevi Bhavnoor and Arun from Belagavi, also lost their lives.
Jyoti’s family shared that the mother and daughter traveled to Prayagraj on January 26 via a private travel agency, along with a group of 13 others. Jyoti’s brother, Gururaj, mentioned that after being injured, they were treated at a private hospital in Prayagraj but sadly passed away despite all efforts.
Jyoti’s husband also shared that a member of their pilgrim group, Chidambar Patil, informed him that his wife and daughter died in the stampede.
