The Tragic Deaths of Two Indian Kota Students: A Call for Action on Mental Health

Two more students have died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, taking the number of student suicides in the coaching hub to 23 this year, the highest in the last eight years.

One of the students was a 17-year-old NEET aspirant who jumped to his death from the sixth floor of a coaching institute. He was a class 12 student from Maharashtra’s Latur district and had been staying with his grandparents in Kota for the last three years.

The other student was a 19-year-old girl who hanged herself at her hostel. She was a first-year student at a medical college in Kota.

The reasons for the suicides are not yet known, but they are likely to be related to the stress of studying for competitive exams and the pressure to succeed. Kota is a major coaching hub for students preparing for competitive exams such as the IIT JEE and NEET. The competition is fierce, and the pressure on students to succeed is immense. Many students find it difficult to cope with the stress, and some resort to suicide as a way to escape.

What is the major reason for suicide?

Mental Stress:

Mental stress is a major problem for students, especially those who are preparing for competitive exams. The pressure to succeed can be overwhelming, and the long hours of study can take a toll on mental health. Students who are feeling stressed may experience anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.

Many things can be done to address the issue of mental stress in students. The government can provide more support for students, such as counseling services and financial assistance. Coaching institutes can reduce the pressure on students by offering more flexible study schedules and by providing more individualized attention. Parents can talk to their children about the importance of mental health and can encourage them to seek help if they are struggling.

We all need to work together to create a more supportive environment for students and to prevent these tragedies from happening.
